Zaragoza brings together national and international experts to analyse the future of urban water.

The current challenges of the integrated water cycle and its future evolution have been the focus of the debate at the conference. ‘'The future of urban water in Spain'’, held in Zaragoza and organized by the City Council together with the Royal Elcano Institute and Facsa.

The meeting brought together approximately 275 national and international experts —both in person and virtually— in an analysis space that addressed the main challenges facing cities in water management.

These challenges include aging infrastructure, the need to adapt to an increasingly demanding climate, and the rise in extreme weather events such as droughts and floods. All of this is happening against a backdrop where long-term planning and operational efficiency are becoming increasingly important.

In this context, technological innovation and digitalization are already key elements in the water sector for improving decision-making, optimizing resource use, and strengthening system resilience. The incorporation of monitoring, sensor, and data analysis tools allows progress toward smarter management models, capable of anticipating incidents and improving service quality.

The event also highlighted the role of environmental education and public awareness as essential tools for moving towards more sustainable water management, integrating society into the challenges of the sector.

Investment and sustainability, key elements of urban water management

During the meeting, the importance of ensuring the economic sustainability of urban water services was highlighted, advocating for models that balance investment, service quality and accessibility for citizens.

In this vein, Zaragoza is promoting the modernization of its water infrastructure and moving towards more efficient management through digitalization projects that incorporate real-time control systems. These initiatives allow for reduced losses, optimized energy consumption, and improved water quality control.

The combination of investment, technology, and strategic planning puts cities in a better position to face current and future urban water challenges, consolidating more sustainable, efficient, and resilient management models.
