Water management is one of the most heavily regulated activities in existence. European legislation, and specifically the Water Framework Directive (WFD), is of particular importance. Under the Directive, water is no longer considered solely as a resource but as a fundamental element of aquatic ecosystems and essential for maintaining good environmental quality. The Directive aims to promote and guarantee the responsible, rational, and sustainable exploitation and use of water resources, emphasizing citizen participation, efficient resource management, and environmental conservation.
