Every May 22nd we celebrate International Biodiversity Day, with the aim of raising awareness about the importance of ecosystems and the animals that inhabit them for the proper functioning of our planet.
Within the framework of this celebration, the Castellón Provincial Council y Facsa They have announced that the second nesting campaign has begun at the wastewater treatment plants in Castellón, an initiative that consists of installing nest boxes, made of pine wood, at wastewater treatment plants in the province of Castellón, for the conservation of biodiversity.
“Thanks to the nest boxes we installed last year at 25 wastewater treatment plants in our province, dozens of birds have found a safe and comfortable place to nest and raise their young. Therefore, this year we want to reinforce this initiative by installing 50 new nest boxes which, in addition to providing a safe haven for birds, are a very effective and sustainable biological means for pest control and eradication,” explained Iván Sánchez, Provincial Deputy for Sports, Hunting, and the Integrated Water Cycle.
The more than twenty selected wastewater treatment plants are located in areas of interest for biodiversity and cover the entire province of Castellón with the aim of verifying the variety of birds that nest in each area.
Sergio Alonso, Deputy Director of Wastewater Treatment Operations at Facsa, highlighted that "the operating staff of these facilities have been trained to foster their interest in ornithology and thus report the observations made at their workplace, involving them in the conservation of local biodiversity, thereby increasing their knowledge of their environment.".
Alonso also emphasized Facsa's commitment to the conservation of biodiversity and natural spaces through its urban wastewater treatment and regeneration service, an activity that contributes to the conservation of seas and marine resources and the halting of land degradation. "An efficient wastewater treatment service prevents the discharge of pollution into seas, rivers, waterways, and the natural environment in general, thus minimizing negative environmental impacts and protecting biodiversity," he explained.
This initiative is aligned with SDG 15 "Protection of life on land" with which the UN has been warning for years of the need to take urgent measures to reduce the loss of natural habitats and biodiversity.
Each year the occupancy percentage is checked to continue measuring the success of the initiative, the boxes are maintained and cleaned, and the number and type of birds that have lived in them are recorded.
