He Castelló City Council y Facsa They are taking a decisive step in the digital transformation of the water cycle in the city of Castellón. The final resolution from the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO), recently published, has confirmed the inclusion of the project 'Digitalization of urban water use in the city of Castelló de la Plana' in the second call for proposals of the PERTE program for the digitalization of the water cycle. This technological upgrade will position Castelló as a leader in the use of cutting-edge technologies for water management, a crucial aspect in the current context of drought.
This ambitious project has been one of the highest-rated nationwide, securing nearly €6 million in funding from the European Union's Next Generation funds. With a score of 84 points, this initiative ranks second among the 50 selected projects out of a total of 238 submitted across Spain. The project, which underscores the importance of public-private partnerships, marks a milestone in the modernization of water management systems, utilizing advanced technologies such as Big Data and Artificial Intelligence to optimize the efficiency and sustainability of this resource.
This will also contribute to increasing sensor coverage throughout Castellón's water cycle, specifically improving water quality monitoring at the Wastewater Treatment Plant, discharge points, and the drinking water supply and distribution system. Furthermore, it will support the continued promotion of reclaimed water and the development of a sanitation management plan.
The project encompasses all phases of the water cycle, from drinking water supply to sanitation and wastewater treatment systems, and offers the capacity to intervene in all relevant aspects of the cycle, including those that comprise the relationships between the various stakeholders involved in its management, from institutions and public administration to subscribers and consumers, thus promoting service transparency. According to the company, “the integration of these functionalities into a single system will allow the use of advanced analytics, including Artificial Intelligence algorithms. These algorithms can be adapted to any management need, thanks to the system's scalability, making it a valuable tool for supporting decision-making in corporate, social, and environmental contexts.”.
For her part, the Mayor of Castellón, Begoña Carrasco, emphasized that “with this project, we demonstrate, once again, the importance of public-private partnerships. In this case, we are working hand in hand with Facsa, a leading company and national benchmark in the supply and implementation of the Integrated Water Cycle, with over 150 years of experience. We must also acknowledge the excellent work of the technicians from various municipal departments. The combined efforts of both entities have made Castellón a leader in the use and management of such a valuable resource as water, offering the best possible service to our citizens. Because together we are better and we achieve more.”.
Through this project, Facsa not only confirms its innovative nature, but also reinforces its commitment to the Castellón society, which it has served since its founding 150 years ago, demonstrating once again its vocation for public service and its commitment to a sustainable future.
