The increase in intense rainfall is causing more frequent and severe floods, particularly in vulnerable areas such as El Grao and La Marjaleria in Castelló, where understanding how water behaves in extreme situations is key. In this context, at Facsa, within the FLOODS project, we have created a comprehensive model that combines surface runoff, natural drainage, the stormwater and sewage network, and the real topography of the land. This approach allows us to simulate different rainfall scenarios and accurately analyse the urban system's response.
Thanks to this tool, we have been able to identify the areas at greatest risk of flooding, detect network sections that become overloaded, and calculate the water depth in different scenarios, which has allowed us to define improvement proposals aimed at reducing the impact of these episodes. FLOODS thus strengthens the capacity for anticipation and decision-making, contributing to the development of safer and more resilient cities in the face of climate change.
