FACSA develops a digital platform to improve water security in industry

ZINNAE INDRISK

Water is a crucial economic asset, and its scarcity a limiting factor for the development of industrial activities, including those linked to the urban water cycle or that combine supply from municipal networks with their own resources.

In this context, FACSA, IDEYA, ZINNAE, and the University of Zaragoza have launched INDRISK. This industrial research project, funded by the Innovative Business Clusters (AEIs) support program of the Ministry of Industry, Trade, and Tourism, aims to develop a digital tool to increase water security for industry, improving resilience to structural water scarcity and drought events.

INDRISK focuses on being a water-related risk management application that processes and exploits information obtained in the company's production and supply chain, as well as that operated on other platforms and public servers with relevant data on the water cycle, primarily the qualitative and quantitative control networks of the Automatic Hydrological Information System operated by the River Basin Authorities, AEMET, Autonomous Communities, as well as other SDI platforms under development or in the future.

In this way, INDRISK represents a quantitative risk assessment tool, based on the evaluation of alert scenarios and simulation of critical scenarios, the result of which is the forecast of river flow availability, piezometric levels in aquifers and reservoir levels that, translated into the metrics of a table of indicators, will give rise to the start of protocols and action measures to anticipate the disruptive event.

Specifically, this digital management platform, based on sensors and indicators, will allow the definition of a gradation of alert levels in order to initiate the respective action protocols regarding water management, develop a risk management indicator panel, improve the efficiency of water management and, therefore, the competitiveness of industries, improve water quality, provide criteria for water reuse, and promote the strategic intelligence of the company through proper water management.

The tool is aimed at those sectors in which water is a key factor, whether in their supply chain, by incorporating it into their products (agrifood industry), or for any other circumstance that makes it a fundamental part of their value chain (water service operators).
