The purpose of overflow weirs, a fundamental element in large sanitation networks, is to allow the evacuation of flow in circumstances where the calculated limit for the operation of wastewater treatment plants is exceeded, a situation that usually occurs during periods of extreme rainfall.
In this context FACSA Aware of the importance of protecting the planet's natural resources, SIMVA is being developed. This project, funded by the Valencian Innovation Agency (AVI), aims to implement a new methodology to assess the impact of sewage overflows on water bodies, define the mixing length, and improve overflow design to reduce their impact on the receiving environment.
SIMVA, which concludes in February 2022, focuses on the development of advanced mathematical models that allow for highly accurate calculations, faithfully and meticulously considering the river's hydraulic characteristics and geometry. To achieve this, FACSA It is employing the latest techniques in two-dimensional hydrodynamic simulation and computational fluid dynamics (CFD) in order to obtain models that accurately determine the hydrodynamic behavior of the river and the spillway discharge.
In addition to developing the model, it is calibrated and validated by quantifying various physicochemical parameters, measured using multiparameter probes or other equipment already installed in the spillway or receiving watercourse, to ensure the accurate reproduction of the hydraulic behavior and reach of the discharge. These validated models will help FACSA find protocols and alternative solutions to reduce the impact of sewage overflows on water bodies, particularly those occurring after periods of heavy rainfall.
SIMVA is a project co-financed by the Valencian Innovation Agency (AVI) through the Promotion Line for R&D&I projects intended for Public Procurement of Innovation / SIMVA Project – INNCP1/2021/3.
