The work is part of the GESTOR project, funded by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness, through the RETOS COLABORACIÓN call.

Castellón, March 1, 2017FACSA, the Spanish company with the most experience in the integrated water cycle management, is currently working together with the Catalan Institute for Water Research (ICRA) and the engineering consultancy ABM Serveis d'Enginyeria i Consulting SL, in the development of a project that will improve the efficiency of urban sanitation infrastructure.

This initiative, called 'GESTOR', aims to create advanced software capable of detecting potential problems or needs in urban sewage systems in advance. This system will optimize the management of drainage infrastructure and facilitate its adaptation to the challenges posed by climate change.

Thus, while ABM will be responsible for simulating the sewer networks, ICRA will develop its own tool, and FACSA will work on validating it within the sewer network. In addition, FACSA will also participate in work related to predicting discharges from combined sewer systems (CSS) and network corrosion.

The GESTOR project It highlights the value of sewer networks, given the service they provide to the community and the potential risks associated with their malfunction. This new decision-support tool will also enable proactive management of drainage systems, anticipating potential breakdowns and thus reducing the network's economic, social, and environmental costs by detecting possible failures early.

The project has great potential for national and international application. The kilometers of sewer systems are constantly increasing worldwide in parallel with the development of countries. Furthermore, older sewer systems require predictive failure tools, as failures are becoming more frequent due to their long service life.

The project, with file number RTC-2016-4876-5, has been co-financed by the Ministry of Economy and Competitiveness and the European Regional Development Fund (ERDF) in the Challenges-Collaboration call of the State Program of Research, Development and Innovation Oriented to the Challenges of Society, within the framework of the State Plan of Scientific and Technical Research and Innovation 2013-2016.
