The Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) in Sa Pobla has been officially opened following the completion of an ambitious expansion and modernization project, carried out by Facsa in a Temporary Joint Venture (UTE) with Melchor Mascaró. The project, promoted by the Balearic Water and Environmental Quality Agency (ABAQUA) and led by the Ministry of the Sea and the Water Cycle, has involved a total investment of 7.4 million euros, financed 60% by ERDF funds.
The project, which involved a complete transformation of the wastewater treatment plant, was carried out over two years without interrupting the treatment service. Among the main technical achievements attained by Facsa and its joint venture partner are the doubling of the process lines, the modernization of the treatment systems, and a 24.1% reduction in specific energy consumption.

Greater treatment capacity
Thanks to the intervention, the plant's treatment capacity has increased by 54%, from 2,500 to 3,850 m³/day, allowing it to serve the equivalent of up to 25,667 inhabitants. Furthermore, advanced biological processes have been incorporated, reducing nitrogen and phosphorus levels by 70–80%, significantly improving the quality of the treated water and protecting the ecological balance of the s'Albufera de Mallorca Natural Park.
Another significant milestone has been the construction of a new 976 m³ storm tank, which strengthens the system's resilience to heavy rainfall and prevents uncontrolled discharges into the environment. The Crestatx pumping station has also been renovated, sludge and wastewater management has been optimized, and environmental and landscape integration solutions have been implemented, including the creation of an artificial wetland. Among these actions, the measures to improve odor control stand out as a key aspect of the project. Covers have been installed on critical equipment, along with ventilation and air filtration systems, and the sludge and pumping lines have been reconfigured. These measures minimize odor emissions and prevent disturbances to residents, thus improving the infrastructure's integration into its surroundings.
The facilities were inaugurated last Thursday during an official visit by the President of the Government of the Balearic Islands, Margalida Prohens, who highlighted the importance of this action to "adapt our infrastructures to the current and future reality of the municipality, while protecting valuable natural spaces such as s'Albufera.".
