Zinnae, the cluster for the efficient use of water, has received a grant of €865,135 to fund six innovative projects, which it will lead itself, and two in collaboration with a cluster in Aragon and another in Catalonia. These initiatives focus on the digital transformation of companies through Industrial Research, and the know-how of Facsa It has been especially key in those developed in wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs).
In the DTCONEDAR PHASE 2 project, Facsa, together with Electroingenium, Nabladot, Diama, and Clenar, has developed a hybrid digital twin for wastewater treatment plants. This technology models both the hydraulic behavior and the biological reactions of the treatment process. Using current data from the plant's SCADA system, the automation and control software facilitates decision-making through a real-time monitoring and calculation interface. Furthermore, it controls PAO and GAO bacteria, optimizing the performance and efficiency of the biological treatment.
The LOWDOS project, in collaboration with the Aragonese Water Institute, Ingeobras, Arateck Electronics, CTA Cinco Villas, and Campag, has developed a technology that significantly reduces the volume of sludge generated during wastewater treatment. By integrating anoxic and aerobic biological processes, LOWDOS degrades COD and reduces sludge production. At the Andorra wastewater treatment plant, sludge production has been reduced by 481 tonnes, exceeding initial expectations.
Facsa's initiatives reflect significant progress in the digitalization and efficiency of wastewater treatment plants, highlighting its commitment to sustainability and technological innovation. These projects, funded by the Innovative Business Clusters (AEIs) of the Ministry of Industry, Trade and Tourism and the European Union – Next Generation EU, represent a crucial step towards the digital and ecological transformation of the water sector. At an Innovation Commission meeting held by Zinnae on April 9, the conclusions of these projects were presented, emphasizing the collaboration between companies and technology centers to address water security challenges under the principles of the circular economy and the smart society.
Facsa thus consolidates its position as a benchmark in efficient water management and in the development of innovative solutions for a sustainable future.
