This week Facsa and Hydrens participated in the 'X Ibero-American Symposium on Waste Engineering. Towards circularity and zero waste (XSIIR)' which is part of the activities organized by the Ibero-American Network on Environmental Sanitation (REDISA).
During these days, nearly 200 studies from 14 Ibero-American countries have been presented and discussed, based on different lines of research focused on the development of comprehensive waste management models, treatment technologies and more sustainable and circular disposal models.
Specifically, Facsa participated in the section dedicated to the 'Circular Economy' through Elena Zuriaga, Technical Manager of R&D&I, and Rubén García Tirado, R&D&I Technician.
Zuriaga delivered a presentation focused on the LIFE AMIA project, explaining that it will improve the final quality of treated wastewater and facilitate both its reuse in agriculture and the use of the sludge and microalgae resulting from the process as fertilizers. This is especially relevant considering that water stress currently affects 130 million EU inhabitants (30% of the population) and that, according to forecasts, water demand will increase by 55% by 2050 compared to 2015 levels, Zuriaga emphasized during her presentation.
García has also analyzed, through the BIOFERES project, key aspects of advanced nutrient recovery from sewage sludge to obtain value-added products for agriculture.
On the other hand, Hydrens, through Rosario Arnau, Head of Projects, participated in the 'Biological Treatment/Biogas' block through a presentation in which Arnau analyzed the technical optimization of the operation of anaerobic digestion on a real scale through intermittent agitation.
The Symposium took place at the Faculty of Legal and Economic Sciences of the Universitat Jaume I in Castelló and was attended by the scientific community and the public-private productive and business sector.
