Facsa y Fovasa Environment The progress of the SYMSITES project, a European Union-funded initiative that aims to develop innovative solutions for sustainable water management and waste valorization, was presented in Austria. As part of the project, a meeting was held in Vienna with the participation of more than 30 partners from nine different countries, where the progress achieved to date was presented.
During the meeting, Raquel Tamarit, R&D&I technician of Facsa, José Antonio Magdalena, R&D&I technician at Fovasa Medioambiente, shared the main results obtained in the operation of the Spanish EcoSite. This pilot plant, located at the Alcoy Wastewater Treatment Plant (WWTP) and owned by the Public Entity for Wastewater Treatment of the Valencian Community (EPSAR), has demonstrated significant progress in the application of innovative technologies for resource recovery and reuse.
During the meeting, the project partners also visited the Austrian EcoSite, as well as the facilities of Berger-Schinken, a meat company collaborating on the project. They also toured the facilities and laboratories of the University for Soil Culture Vienna, where key studies are being conducted for the development of new solutions in the field of the circular economy.
The technology developed at SYMSITES, based on an anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) system, has shown favorable results in accordance with current regulations for the reuse of reclaimed water in various agricultural, urban, and industrial applications. Furthermore, research has continued into processes for the recovery of high-value-added products, such as biogas, green hydrogen, biochar, and fertilizers.
SYMSITES, funded through the HORIZON-CL4-2021-TWIN-TRANSITION-01 Program (Grant Agreement 101058426), is progressing towards its final phase, with its completion planned for May 2026.
