ENEDAR promotes the circular economy with the production of biogas and biofertilizers from sewage sludge

Converting waste into resources is now one of the key drivers for advancing the circular economy in the water sector. And that has been precisely the objective of this project. ENEDA, led by Facsa and developed in collaboration with Genesal Energy, Aimen Technological Center, Smallops and the University of Valladolid, through its Institute of Sustainable Processes, which is reaching its final stage after successfully completing an ambitious research project aimed at transforming sewage sludge into sustainable energy and fertilizers.

Over three years, the consortium has developed a comprehensive process that valorizes sewage sludge by generating biogas and biomethane, as well as high-value biofertilizers suitable for agricultural application. This commitment to innovation reinforces the role of wastewater treatment plants as sources of renewable energy and resource recovery centers.

The project, which has been carried out in collaboration with the Public Entity for Wastewater Treatment of the Valencian Community (EPSAR), has allowed us to delve deeper into the energy potential of sludge and the possibilities of closing the cycle through its agricultural use, reducing the environmental impact and emissions associated with the management of this waste.

Thanks to these advances, ENEDAR is consolidating itself as a key step towards the energy self-sufficiency of wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs), providing sustainable, innovative and efficient solutions that contribute to improving current treatments and moving towards a circular and low-carbon management of the water cycle.

The ENEDAR project (PROJECT CPP2021-008427), with a duration of 36 months and a total budget of 1,104,928.73 euros, is financed by MICIU/AEI/10.13039/501100011033 and by the European Union “NextGenerationEU”/PRTR”.
