The Castellón City Council has awarded Facsa the new contract for the management and maintenance of the city's wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), as well as its associated sanitation network—which includes pumping stations and main collectors—one of the most important contracts in the municipal water system. The contract, worth €17.8 million and with a duration of four years (extendable to a fifth), places the company in charge of a service essential to the city.
The city council has made a strong commitment to sustainability by incorporating into the tender documents requirements and award criteria based on service optimization, self-consumption of electricity and even the promotion of R&D&I.
Facsa's offer obtained the highest overall score in the bidding process, standing out for the balance between the technical and economic proposal, with a complete vision of the integrated cycle, including consumption patterns, rainfall and wastewater generation, as well as the behavior of the sanitation network and its relationship with the urban structure.
This is complemented by experience in anticipating weather events and the predictive capabilities associated with the progressive digitalization of the service. This combination of experience, data, and system knowledge provides added value for optimizing management, improving operational efficiency, and strengthening the service's resilience.
This contract marks the beginning of a new phase in service improvement through the incorporation of technological solutions and innovations aimed at optimizing processes and reducing environmental impact. Furthermore, it will allow management to adapt to the sector's new regulatory requirements, in a context of increasing regulatory and environmental pressure. The objective is clear: to continue offering an efficient, safe, and sustainable service, with direct benefits for citizens and the urban environment.
Sanitation and wastewater treatment constitute a strategic infrastructure, playing an increasingly important role in shaping sustainable cities. Proper wastewater management is key to environmental protection, resource reuse, and the resilience of urban systems to scenarios of increased water and climate pressure.
Nearly half a century serving the city
The award coincides with a significant moment for the facility, which is approaching its 50th anniversary.
The wastewater treatment plant, built in 1979, has been an integral part of Castelló's urban and environmental development for decades. Located on Camí Fondo, the plant has a treatment capacity of approximately 45,000 cubic meters per day, serving a population of around 200,000.
Throughout this time, the facility has evolved to adapt to the needs of the city and the regulatory and technological requirements of the sector, currently constituting an example of sustainability and circular economy.
