Castellón takes a step forward in guaranteeing the quality of the water it supplies to its citizens by obtaining the certification ISO 22000 in its supply service, managed in the city by the Castellón City Council and Facsa. This accreditation, granted by the entity SGS International Certification Services Ibérica, This makes the capital of La Plana one of the first cities in Spain to apply this demanding international standard to the field of drinking water.
The mayor of Castellón highlighted that “few water management companies have this food safety certification, which places Castellón and Facsa at the forefront of safe and advanced management of the integrated water cycle at the national level and demonstrates a commitment to quality and trust for residents.” Carrasco also emphasized that “this recognition reflects the commitment of the Castellón City Council and Facsa to water quality, sustainability, and excellence in service delivery, consolidating a modern management model prepared for the health and environmental challenges of the present and future.”.
ISO 22000, initially developed to ensure food safety, has been successfully adapted to the drinking water sector, guaranteeing its safety throughout the entire process—from source to tap. This certification strengthens the security of the supply through a preventative approach based on risk analysis, and also includes specific measures against intentional threats, such as sabotage or unauthorized access.
Enhanced security against intentional threats
One of the most significant aspects of this certification is the incorporation of a specific defense system against potential threats, both accidental and deliberate. The standard establishes protocols for preventing and responding to acts of sabotage, intentional contamination, or unauthorized access, thus reinforcing the overall security of the service. This level of protection, crucial in the drinking water sector, makes Castellón's water supply system one of the safest in the country.
ISO 22000 certification introduces a prevention-based management model, where hazard analysis and critical control points become key tools for ensuring water safety. This approach allows for the detection of potential threats before they reach the consumer, enabling proactive and efficient action. Pascual Maximino, The director of the Supply Area of Facsa, also highlighted that “the implementation and certification of this standard has allowed us to review and optimize the quality control processes of the water we supply to the city of Castellón, and opens the door to extending this model to the rest of the services we manage.”.
