Maintaining the circularity of the integral water cycle in a sustainable manner, by making use of the sludge generated in the purification process by incorporating it as nutrients to the field, is the objective of the 'Cuesta de Burgos' Biosolids Composting Plant. Facsa It has been successfully managed since November 2020.
Thus, the Burgos Municipal Water Company has decided to grant again to Facsa the operation and maintenance of this plant in which the company annually treats some 35,000 tons of dehydrated sludge collected from the Burgos WWTP.
Specifically, this treatment consists of bio-drying and sanitization at very high temperatures, forming compost piles that are periodically turned by a front-end loader until the sludge reaches a dryness level of 66.1% and its weight is reduced by one-third. It is worth noting that the agricultural application of the composted sludge is primarily carried out on cereal (wheat and barley) and sunflower fields in the province of Burgos.
With this new contract, worth close to 500,000 euros and valid for two years, extendable for up to four more, Facsa reaffirms its commitment to systems and processes that allow for increasingly efficient resource management to promote the circular economy in the water sector and achieve more sustainable environments and cities.
