The quality of drinking water is a fundamental factor for public health and the well-being of citizens, as well as an essential indicator of efficient and sustainable water resource management. Within this framework, the Alcalà-Alcossebre City Council has reaffirmed its commitment to the continuous improvement of the water supply service through a firm commitment to the digitalization of the urban water cycle.
Specifically, the council has awarded to Facsa The implementation of an advanced service digitization system, financed through the Recovery, Transformation and Resilience Plan (PERTE) granted by the Valencian Regional Government, has been officially launched. The signing of the site handover document, which took place last Friday and was attended by Mayor Francisco Juan and the head of the Projects and Works Department of Facsa, Iñaki Elorza, marks the official start of this project, whose activities will begin in the coming weeks.
The mayor of Alcalà-Alcossebre, Francisco Juan, emphasized that “modernization and investment in technology are fundamental to maximizing the service and ensuring its quality, and residents will be able to notice this in their homes.”.
As part of the project, multiparameter sensors will be installed in the distribution network to monitor water quality in real time, along with sensors to measure consumption at reservoir outlets and water level gauges at discharge points. These technologies will facilitate the collection of daily, real-time data on key parameters in the three population centers: Alcalà de Xivert, Alcossebre, and Capicorb.
This technological advancement will allow for a faster and more precise response to any anomaly, improving the safety and quality of the water supply. Furthermore, it will help optimize resources, reduce losses, and ensure greater control over water traceability, resulting in direct benefits for residents, who will enjoy a more modern, efficient, reliable, and transparent service.
Annual network renewal and maintenance plan
In parallel with the digitization project, the City Council and Facsa They continue to implement the Annual Renewal and Maintenance Plan for the distribution network, which has been in effect since 2008. In 2025, the work is focused on the urban center of Alcalà de Xivert, where more than 2,500 meters of pipes are being renewed on streets such as San Mateu, San Gregori, De la Plana, Zaragoza, El Ports, Doctor Ebrí, Maestrat, and Todos los Santos. The renewal of 563 meters of pipe on Torrebadum Street in Alcossebre has also recently been completed.
These improvements help reduce losses, improve pressure and flow stability, and facilitate maintenance work without the need for prolonged supply interruptions, directly benefiting households in the municipality.
Improved hydraulic performance
The impact of these actions is already reflected in the data for the first half of 2025. Thanks to the renewal plan, the improvement of infrastructure and preventive maintenance, the volume of water injected into the network has been reduced by 12%, which has resulted in an improvement in hydraulic performance of more than 5%.
Over the past 18 months, more than 27 kilometers of pipelines have been inspected, and an average of 3 kilometers of network have been renewed annually. With these improvements, the system's performance is expected to improve significantly this year, and further increases are anticipated once the digitization technologies are fully operational.
