ABAQUA reinforces the wastewater treatment infrastructure of Ibiza ahead of the peak season

The Balearic Water and Environmental Quality Agency (ABAQUA), an entity attached to the Ministry of the Sea and the Water Cycle of the Government of the Balearic Islands, has completed a comprehensive cleaning plan of the pumping stations associated with the wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) of Ibiza to prepare the facilities for the increased activity typical of the high season.

The work, carried out during the months prior to summer, strengthens the safety, reliability and responsiveness of the sanitation network during a period when the volume of wastewater generated increases significantly, especially in areas with greater residential, tourist and port activity.

The work involved checking the overall condition of the pumps and removing debris, sand, and accumulations that could affect the proper functioning of the equipment. This reduces the risk of incidents, improves service continuity, and prevents potential odor problems associated with localized accumulations of debris in the manholes.

The work has been carried out at all pumping stations, with particular attention to those located in the Port and Talamanca areas, two especially sensitive points due to their location and the volume of water they handle. In the case of the Port Pumping Station, its role is particularly important, as it has an attached stormwater tank and rainwater pumping station that help prevent flooding in Ibiza Town and minimize potential overflows into the sea in the port area.

During this operation, over 100 tons of sludge that flows through the municipal sewer system and accumulates in the pumping stations have been removed. These works have allowed the system to anticipate the needs of the peak season in an area where the proper functioning of the sanitation infrastructure is essential for residents, tourism, and the protection of the natural environment.

This action is part of the new stage of the wastewater treatment service in Ibiza and Formentera, after ABAQUA, responsible for the service, awarded the management and operation of the wastewater treatment plants and their associated sanitation networks to the joint venture formed by the companies Facsa, Islasfalto and the Juan Bufí group.
