The Balearic Water and Environmental Quality Agency (ABAQUA), under the Ministry of the Sea and the Water Cycle, has installed 78 photovoltaic panels at Ibiza's main wastewater pumping station. This project will significantly reduce the electricity consumption of this infrastructure, which is responsible for pumping wastewater to the treatment plant.
The new facility will produce more than 61,000 kWh of renewable energy per year, which will be consumed directly at the station. This will reduce the amount of electricity that must be drawn from the grid and the environmental impact associated with operating this essential service.
This action increases the energy efficiency of an infrastructure that operates continuously throughout the year and which becomes especially relevant during the summer months, when the volume of wastewater that the system must manage increases.
The photovoltaic installation is one of several measures that ABAQUA, together with the joint venture formed by Facsa, Islasfalto, and the Juan Bufí group, is implementing to reduce energy consumption and the environmental impact of the service. These measures include the use of a zero-emission vehicle fleet and the production of domestic hot water using solar thermal energy.
With these actions, the Ministry of the Sea and the Water Cycle continues to advance in the more efficient management of the wastewater treatment infrastructure of the Balearic Islands and in obtaining certification of the service in accordance with the ISO 50001 energy management standard.
